The Write Way: Ideas

Spoiler alert: there is no “right” way, and if someone tells you there is, don’t listen. Writing isn’t a rote exercise, an assembly line, or a hideout for the uninspired. But there are a few simple considerations that can enrich your efforts. They are the write way. In the next few blog posts, we will explore some of them.

Let’s start with a common question from every book launch I’ve ever done. “Where do you get your ideas?” This is very subjective. Again, no right way. But I’ll share my experiences, for books I’ve published and for those that are pre-published.

Years ago, I wanted to install a new kitchen counter. We went to Lowe’s. Boring. As I examined different little squares of a man-made composite material (OK, it was Corian), I found one I loved. Perfect. Turning it over, the name grabbed me by the, well, you know. Staron. Immediately, a dystopian novel began to take shape in my mind. One of the characters, in what would become a trilogy, is named Staron. He’s not the protagonist, but he does have a major role. I sold this trilogy to Little Brown. The story of that is for another blog.

The Girl with Chameleon Eyes. My granddaughter’s eyes are, I suppose, hazel. They change color. One day, when they had gone to gray, I laughed and told her she had chameleon eyes. It had to be a book.

Love is a River. There is a local bike trail nearby along the Allegheny River. On days when I ride far enough, there’s a Civil War cemetery to pass. I often stop to look at the gravestones and names. Fascinating. New book is born.

I could (and do) go on. But you get the idea. Anything can be an inspiration. Places, things, people, events, history–ideas for books are those seemingly mundane parts of life that have a spark that’s meant just for you. If nothing is grabbing you, no worries. Writers gotta write. The point is to pay attention and not to make the mistake of ignoring an idea because you think it’s too thin for an entire book plot. Once you begin, the story will carry you along.

Stay tuned for more the next time! Be blessed today!
